Richard Hyatt’s letter has missed the mark (“Dilbert’s punishment is misplaced anger”).

The removal of the cartoon “Dilbert” has nothing whatsoever to do with the character in the cartoon or the cartoon itself. It is related to the racist speech of the creator. We do not, and should not ever, allow racists to display their wares in public, regardless of the qualities of said wares. If Hitler had a cartoon that was funny and non-offensive, would we allow it to be printed in the paper? No we would not.

By pulling the cartoon, the publisher isn’t punishing anyone, let alone engineers or engineering enthusiasts. Not having access to a funny comic is a small price to pay for common decency and civility.
