FAIRFIELD — A house on Martin Stream Road was heavily damaged Sunday when an all-terrain vehicle caught fire and the flames spread to the home and a shed, according to the Fairfield fire chief.
The homeowner returned from riding the ATV just after 6 p.m. and parked it between the house and shed, fire Chief Duane Bickford said Monday. The ATV then started on fire, with flames spreading to both buildings.
It took several hours to put out the fire, Bickford said. The house was badly damaged and the shed destroyed. Flames spread up the exterior of the house and reached the attic, he said.
The homeowner and his wife were home at the time and suffered minor injuries as they attempted to extinguish the flames and retrieve items.
Along with Fairfield-Benton Fire Rescue, several other departments responded, including Norridgewock, Oakland and Skowhegan.
