A woman has died and a man in serious condition after a fire in Readfield on Friday.

Firefighters from the Readfield Fire Department and neighboring departments responded to 421 Plains Road shortly before 10 p.m. for a reported house fire.

When they arrived, the house was engulfed in flames and neighbors were helping Jerrold Wentworth, 74, who escaped from a second-floor window, Shannon Moss, public information officer for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said in a news release.

Wentworth told firefights his wife Carolyn Wentworth, 75, was still inside on the second floor. Because of the extent of the fire, firefighters were not able to get into the home to attempt a rescue.

The house was destroyed.

The Office of State Fire Marshal was notified and deployed a team of investigators, Moss said.

At about 1:45 a.m. Saturday after an extended search, investigators located the body of a victim in the debris in the area where Carolyn Wentworth had been sleeping, Moss said. The victim was taken to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta for positive identification and a determination of the cause of death.

Jerrold Wentworth remains hospitalized at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta.

Fire investigators returned to the Plains Road home later Saturday to examine the fire scene and interview neighbors in an effort to determine the cause of the fire.
