MADISON – Shirley Anne Dickey, 87, passed away peacefully at Mount St. Joseph’s Senior Living Home in Waterville on March 18, 2023.

She was born in Attleboro, Mass. on March 23, 1935 to Raymond and Izola (Barnes) Edwards. Her childhood was spent in Attleboro, Mass. and Pawtucket, R.I. before moving to Maine in 1949 at the age of 14. Her family settled in Madison where she attended Madison schools. They moved to North Anson in 1953 when Shirley finished school.

Shirley met the love of her life, Gene Everett Dickey in North Anson. They were married on March 19, 1955 at the Methodist Church. She was a homemaker most of her life and they lived in Anson while Gene worked at the paper mill in Madison. In her early years, she and Gene loved camping and cookouts on the Carrabassett River with their boys. They also belonged the Northeastern Car Club, loved dancing at Smitty’s, and traveling to fairs all over the state until Gene’s death in 1997. Shirley continued to be active as a volunteer at the Madison schools and the Dill Center in Skowhegan. She also bowled in leagues in Madison and Skowhegan. She was outgoing, adventurous, and loved to have fun.

She lived at One Madison Avenue in Madison for many years with her beloved chihuahua, Pixie Lee. Shirley enjoyed visiting with her friends, shopping and eating out with her sister, and time spent with her boys, grandchildren and nieces when they visited her there. She and her sister became very close during those years and spent much time together.

Shirley survived many adversities in her life but got through them and always remained spirited and upbeat. She was a one-of-a-kind lady, and you always knew how she felt about something. She loved her family deeply and will be missed just as much.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Gene; and three sons, Raymond, Eugene, and Craig.

She is survived by her sons Klayton (Donna) Dickey and Kevon (Beverly) Dickey; sister, Beverly Edwards; grandchildren Holly, Brian, and Brett Dickey, Lance Quimby, Bobby Aube, Jennifer Hall, Mia Hoveland, Daniel Dickey, and Tony Paradie; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Her family would like to thank all the staff at Mount Saint Joseph’s for their care and compassion, always treating Shirley as if she were their own family member.

There will be no visitation. Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 25, at 11 a.m. in the morning at Giberson Funeral Home, 40 Maple St., Madison. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery in North Anson in May.
