I have lived in Augusta or the Augusta area for 50 years. I love this area and all that it has to offer. I’ve always been satisfied with the services available and the care that the city uses on itself. I see this trend changing and I’m sure a lot of it is caused by time changes and money. The number of vacant buildings that stick out, especially as you enter our city from the interstate make our beautiful city look like it has seen better days. That is not the image that the capital of our state should present.

My main reason for writing today is that I live on the outskirts of the city in my own home. There is a street light directly across from the end of my driveway. I have always loved that light and how safe and secure it made me feel.

Well, that light has been out since last November. I have called the city at least twice. Their answer was that they will fix it when they have enough lights out to make it worth hiring someone to fix them.

I happen to be a senior citizen who lives alone and that light has always given me a sense of safety. Now I lock my doors as soon as it gets dark and try not to look out the window. I no longer feel that comfort.

I gather this lack of response means the city has no intention of fixing the light or they just don’t care how one of its elderly citizens feels. I would much prefer the truth if their intention is not to fix that light at all.
