Linwood Hoyt Butterfield

AUGUSTA- Linwood Hoyt Butterfield, 98, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 25, 2023 at the Maine Veterans’ Home, Augusta Campus.

Dad was born in Farmington, Maine on Feb. 4, 1925. He was the first of two sons born to Leroy Butterfield and Christie (Moore) Butterfield. His parents divorced in 1927 and he was raised by his grandparents James and Etta (Hoyt) Moore. He attended schools in New Sharon, Maine and after graduating from high school, joined the United States Navy. He served in both Atlantic and Pacific war theaters during World War II in United States Navy Armed Guard.

After he was discharged from the Navy, he returned to Maine and married Aristean Mae Stevens on November 19, 1948 in Brunswick, Maine. The couple moved to Chicago, Illinois and Dad attended the Chicago Technical College receiving a Bachelor of Construction Engineering degree.

After graduation, he was employed by two consulting engineer companies in Chicago, Illinois, Greely and Hanson, and E.R. Gritschke and Harriman. After the couple returned back to Maine, he was employed for a time as an architect and engineer in Auburn, Maine.

Dad and Mom eventually settled in Augusta, Maine and Dad was hired by the State of Maine and spent thirty-four years with the Bureau of Public Improvement (now known as the Bureau of General Services). He held a Senior Engineering Technician Certificate while employed by the State. He was a member of the Maine Engineers Association as well as the American Society of Heating and Air Conditioning Engineers.

Dad was active in the Maine State Employees Association (now known as the Maine Service Employees Association). During his tenure with the Union, he served on many committees, was elected as a Chapter President numerous times, served for twenty-two years on the Unions Board of Directors, was Statewide Union Vice-President for two terms and Statewide Union President for two terms. He was also a current member of the Area II Retirees of MSEA Chapter.

Dad retired from State service on Jan. 19, 1991, and proceeded to have a well deserved time of relaxation after many years of service to our country and our state.

He spent some of this time as a member of The United States Navy Armed Guard World War II Veterans Association and The American Legion. He was also a member of the Green Street Methodist Church in Augusta, Maine.

He was predeceased by his grandparents James and Etta Moore, his parents, Leroy and Christie Butterfield, his brother Albion Butterfield and his wife Aristean (Tena) Butterfield.

He is survived by his son Steven J. Butterfield and wife Janet of Hallowell, Maine, daughters, Nancy A. Goodwin and husband Sean of Augusta, Maine and Linda J. Thurston and husband Glenn of Topsham, Maine, grandchildren, Ryan J. Thurston and wife Nancy-Grace of Topsham, Maine, Tracy L. Thurston and boyfriend Michael Natale of Topsham, Maine, Steven J. Butterfield, II of Augusta, Maine and Matthew K. Butterfield and partner Joe Garbiel of Belchertown, Massachusetts.

The family wishes to extend our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the staffs of the Maine Veterans’ Home, Augusta Campus and Wholistic Homecare for making Dad’s final years, months and days enjoyable and filled with joy and laughter.

At our Dad’s request there will be no visiting hours or funeral service. The family will have a private graveside service later in the spring.
