The March 22 article, “Authorities arrest 17 undocumented migrant workers in Lisbon,” left readers with an slanted perspective of the incident. Many political leaders and supporting media lead citizens to believe undocumented equates with criminal. This carries consequences for those seeking life-saving refuge and the communities who benefit from their presence.

Missing from news reports is that in 1951 the United States signed onto the United Nations Refugee Convention. This was the world’s response, after the atrocities of World War II, to guarantee those fleeing harm a safe haven. But we have not followed this agreement. The southern border has been closed to most for three years. This goes against this agreement. Many who manage to enter the country are sent back to the country they fled which also goes against this agreement.

As signs for “help needed” continue, we would be smart to welcome those seeking home and safety here.
