AUGUSTA — A New York man has been indicted on charges he committed an armed robbery at a Clinton home and later threatened to kill the homeowner and his family as police listened to a telephone call.

Tyler Brown-Richards, 25, of Bronx, New York, allegedly robbed a house on Cindy Blodgett Drive in Clinton on Dec. 20, 2022, when he was confronted by the homeowner, according to an affidavit filed by Joshua Chouinard, a patrol officer with the Clinton Police Department.

The resident, who police said knew Brown-Richards by the nickname “Ghost,” said he confronted Brown-Richards after coming home, finding the New York man loading items from the house into a truck bed. The intruder then allegedly pulled a gun out of his pocket and pointed it at the resident’s stomach. Brown-Richards then reportedly ran back to the truck, got in and left.

While officer Chouinard was standing in the resident’s driveway discussing what had been taken, Brown-Richards allegedly called the man, who put his phone on speaker so the officer could listen.

Brown-Richards “stated that he was going to kill him, (the man’s) girlfriend and his family,” according to the officer’s affidavit.

The resident said items taken from his house included an arcade game from his son’s bedroom, swords, two bows and a television, although the resident was able to grab the television out of the back of the truck as the suspect was leaving.

Maine State Police later stopped the suspect vehicle, occupied by Brown-Richards and two other men, on Bangor Road in Benton. Police could see an arcade game sticking out the truck’s bed.

Brown-Richards denied pulling a gun on the homeowner. Police later located a firearm down the road from the residence, next to a snowbank.

Brown-Richards was recently indicted by a Kennebec County grand jury on charges of robbery, a class A felony punishable by up to 30 years in prison, and charges of burglary, terrorizing, criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, theft by unauthorized taking, criminal mischief and aggravated forgery.

The forgery charge was filed after police said they found a fake $50 bill in Brown-Richards’ pocket while searching him.

An indictment is not a determination of guilt, but it indicates there is enough evidence to proceed with formal charges and a trial.
