Frederick DeGarmo “Rick” Smith

DRACUT, Mass. – Frederick DeGarmo “Rick” Smith, 62, loving husband, father, grandfather, resident of Dracut, passed away following a lengthy illness on Thursday, March 23, 2023, with his loving family by his side. He was the beloved husband of Cynthia E. (Hines) Smith with whom he shared 34 years of marriage.

Born in Bath on Nov. 15, 1960, he was a son of the late Gerald H. and Anne (Day) Smith.

Rick enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1979 where he was trained in the “New Field” of Computer Programming and Data retrieval. He was extremely proud to have served aboard the USS Enterprise, CVN-65, the first nuclear powered Aircraft Carrier. This experience led to Rick’s career in computer programming for many financial institutions and brokerage firms.

Rick was an avid builder of models, jigsaw puzzles, painting, Legos and enjoyed writing letters and poems to Cindy. His children were truly his joy in life and was constantly encouraging their interests, including all types of music, playing any sport that they showed interest and many adventures which would eventually include the words, “don’t tell Mom”.

In addition to his wife Cindy, he leaves three children, Christopher T. Smith of Alburgh, Vt., Brian P. Smith of Leominster, Mass. and Lauren Smith Cofer and her husband Matthew of Leominster, Mass.; a most precious granddaughter, Theresa M. Smith; two brothers, David D. Smith of Woolwich, and Stephen P. Smith and his wife Constance of Front Royal, Va.; his father-in-law, Herbert A. Hines and his wife Gladys of Davenport, Fla.; two brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law, Timothy A. Hines and his wife Roberta of Punta Gorda, Fla., Thomas W. Hines and his wife Buffy of Freetown, Mass., and Doreen Vela and her husband Daniel of Sandwich, Mass.; also several nieces and nephews.

Rick was predeceased by his mother-in-law, Margaret R. Hines; his brother-in-law, Donald H, Hines; and his best friend whom he dearly missed, Gunny, the Catahoula Leopard Dog.

It being his request, funeral services will be private. A celebration of Rick’s life will be held at Lenzi’s Function Facility, 810 Merrimack Ave., Dracut, Mass., on Saturday, April 15 at 12 p.m.
