I heard Senate Republican leader Trey Stewart speak on the radio the other day, complaining how the Democrats are handling the state budget process. He asked voters to call their Democratic representatives and tell them to change course.

Well, I want the Democrats to know that they’re doing a great job. Passing a budget that funds our schools, restores revenue sharing, and expands health care coverage for children and families is exactly what the Maine people want. I applaud our Legislature’s decision to pass a budget early in the legislative session this year, instead of waiting until the last minute, as in previous years. Isn’t it better to negotiate when there’s no threat of a government shutdown? This is a compromise that works in everyone’s favor. State employees won’t wonder if they’ll be furloughed, school districts can plan their budgets, and Democrats and Republicans can keep negotiating right up until the last day of the legislative session.

Sen. Stewart was complaining that Gov. Mills’ process for the state budget is different than previous years, but just because we’ve always done something one way, doesn’t mean we should keep doing it. I understand some people are uncomfortable about change because they only understand one way of doing things, but I elected my representative to be forward thinking and to make progress for our futures. I am grateful they are doing just that.
