Frances Irene Clark Gowen

GORHAM – Mrs. Frances Irene Clark Gowen, 92, passed away peacefully from a variety of health issues after a wonderful visit from family on March 30, 2023. She was the beloved wife of Carl H. Gowen with whom she shared 63 years of marriage.

Frances was born June 7, 1930, in Augusta. She is the daughter of the late William James and Helen Frances (Jones) Clark. She was a resident of Augusta for many years before recently moving to Gorham. She is a graduate of Cony High School, class of 1949.

Frances worked at Adams Department Store as a bookkeeper for several years. She was also a clerk for Camp Keyes and the Adjutant Generals Department for several years. She was a stay-at-home mom for many years. When her children went to school Frances started working at Sears Department Store as a clerk for many years until her retirement.

Frances was a Girl Scout Leader for eight years. She loved camping with her family and friends, she and Carl camped at Green Valley in Vassalboro for over 40 years. She also enjoyed knitting, crocheting, cribbage, music, crafting, and playing with her dogs. Frances had a wonderful love for God and was looking forward to being welcomed into His arms.

In addition to her loving husband Carl, Frances is survived by her daughter Ellen Louise Gowen Lucy and her husband John of Sebago, her son, Dennis Carl Gowen and his wife Rhonda of Bismarck, N.D.; her brother, Arthur L. Clark of Belgrade; and her cherished grandchildren Abby Lucy-Tucker and her husband Jesse, Carolyn, Brian, and Kevin Lucy, Robin, Evan, and Jane Gowen. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, friends, and family members.

In addition to her parents, Frances was predeceased by her brother, James Everett Clark.

Frances’ graveside service will be held at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel, 163 Mount Vernon Rd., Augusta, on Friday, April 7, at 1 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.

The family wishes to thank Gorham House and Compassus Hospice for the genuine, compassionate care that was given to Frances, as well as the family, in the last few months.
