Phyllis Lorraine Perkins

SKOWHEGAN – Phyllis Lorraine Perkins, of Skowhegan, passed away peacefully on March 30, 2023 at Woodlawn Nursing Home at nearly 96 years old.

“Lorraine”, as she preferred to be called, was born April 3, 1927, in Newport. Her parents were Dr. T.S. Clement and H. Laura Munson Clement, who were residents of Newport for many years.

She graduated from Newport schools in 1945, went on to attend the University of Maine, and received her Registered Nurse (RN) degree from Eastern Maine General Hospital School of Nursing in 1948. Upon graduation she accepted a job at Redington Memorial Hospital in Skowhegan, where she met the love of her life, George W. Perkins, whom she eventually married in 1952. She continued to work at Redington Memorial Hospital until the birth of her first child. She then became a full-time wife, homemaker, and mother who dedicated her life to her family.

She enjoyed her summers at their cottage at Lake Wesserunsett and relished the close community relationships she had with multiple families who also vacationed and lived in the area. She took pleasure in many group gatherings and social events. In her later years both she and her husband George loved “wintering” in Florida, until George’s passing in 2002. In recent years she resided first at Redington Memorial Home, and then at Woodlawn Nursing Home.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband; and her sister, Colleen and husband Fred Bean of Bangor.

She is survived by her son, Christopher Perkins, and his wife, Claire, of Skowhegan, as well as her son, Scott Perkins, and wife, Johanna, from Southbridge, Mass.

There will be a graveside service at Riverside Cemetery in Newport in late spring at a date to be determined.

The family thanks the staff at Woodlawn Rehabilitation and Nursing Center and Beacon Hospice for their compassionate care of Lorraine.

Arrangements are under the care of Smart and Edwards Funeral Home, Skowhegan. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at http://www.SmartandEdwardsFH.com for the Perkins family.
