WATERVILLE — The Colby College women’s lacrosse team got to work early in its non-conference matchup against the University of Southern Maine on Wednesday night.

The Mules scored seven goals in the first quarter on the way to a 14-3 victory over the Huskies at Alfond Field. It’s the seventh straight victory for Colby (7-3) after starting the season off with an 0-3 record.

The game was not played in ideal conditions, with freezing rain pelting the field throughout.

“It’s been a great start to the season,” Colby head coach Karen Henning said. “I’m glad we got this game in, because the last two years it’s been cancelled because of weather or COVID or something.”

USM dropped to 5-6.

Five different players players scored two goals each for the Mules: Ally Franz, Julia Jardina, Cami McDonald, Ali Gill and Kins Helmer. Gianna Bruno, Paige Saudek, Gennie Littlejohn and Julia Maimonis each added goals for Colby, which was missing top scorer Annie Eddy due to a leg injury.

Cierra Hill, Kiaya Gatchell and Julia McKenna each tallied goals for the Huskies. Goalkeeper Cece Racine had 11 saves.

Abby Booth and Gigi Peloso each had a save for Colby.
