Freemont D. Avery

DOVER-FOXCROFT – Freemont Daniel Avery, 76, passed away suddenly April 5, 2023, at his home in Brewer. He was born Dec. 10, 1946, in Athens, the son of Alton and Beryl (Corson) Avery.

Freemont was known as a jokester to his friends and staff. He was always ready with a joke and a laugh. Freemont enjoyed attending a day program at the Charlotte White Center, socializing with his many friends. He looked forward to going out into the community, shopping at Reny’s, Walmart, and the dollar store searching for the perfect pair of sunglasses and clip on sunglasses. His favorite place to eat was Pats Dairyland in Dover- Foxcroft, ordering macaroni and cheese with a grilled hot dog. He loved it when the staff took him out for coffee. Freemont looked forward to visiting Pleasant Pond with his guardian’s family where he fished, jet skied, rode on the four wheeler, and snowmobiled.

His passion was country music with Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash as his all time favorite artists; Loretta Lynn, Kitty Wells, and Patsy Cline were also tops on his list of country singers. Freemont’s favorite songs included “Let the Circle be Unbroken” and “Ring of Fire”. Freemont spent hours and hours watching Andy Griffith sitting in his rocker recliner in his room.

Freemont was part of an experiment when he was one of six chosen to be rehomed from Pineland and into the first group home in the nation. He later moved into an assisted living apartment with 24 hour staffing. The experiment was so successful that group homes, assisted living, and shared homes are now nationwide.

Freemont is survived by his longtime guardian and friend, Carla Small and her husband, Stephen, of Bingham; and brothers, Elton (Joanna) Avery, Sanford (Phyllis) Avery, and David (Edna) Avery, all of Athens. Freemont was predeceased by his long time housemate, Ada York; and infant sister, Marie

Freemont had special staff members that were devoted to him. There were many but the following were especially close, Ann Marie Wintle, Debbie Frost, John Gornall, and Janet Jay. Freemont’s family and guardian would like to thank all staff that made Freemont’s life of the highest quality.
