Raymond D. Pepin

AUGUSTA – Raymond D. Pepin, 94, passed away peacefully on Good Friday, April 7, 2023, at the Alfond Center for Health in Augusta following a brief illness. He was born on Nov. 29, 1928, the son of the late George and Margaret (McNamara) Pepin.

Ray graduated from Cony High School in 1947. He was a communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church and a lifelong member of the Calumet Club.

He is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Ray was predeceased by his parents; his sister Louise Veilleux and her husband Martin; his sister Yvette Morrissette and her husband Wilfred; his sister Beatrice Gilbert and her husband Henry; his sister, Madeline Patenaude and her husband Irenee; his brother Leo Pepin and his brother, Richard Pepin and his wife Bernadette.

Ray started his banking career at First National Granite Bank in 1947 for a period of 20 years. While he was employed there, his friend Richard Sanborn, a trustee at Kennebec Savings Bank, contacted him and told him that Kennebec Savings Bank had an opening for an assistant treasurer. Ray applied for that position and was hired. When he started his employment, he was one of six employees, and the bank had a total of $11 million in deposits. Today the bank has a total of $1.6 billion in deposits and 200 employees. He was very happy with his employment at Kennebec Savings Bank and worked there for 26 years. He was elected as president in 1980. He retired from Kennebec Savings Bank in 1993.

Ray always said that joining Kennebec Savings Bank was the best thing he ever did. He treated every customer as if it were his own personal business. He loved the bank, and as far as he was concerned, Kennebec Savings Bank is the best bank in the State of Maine.

Ray also always enjoyed his summer home on Cobbossee Lake and in 1970, he built a new one and stayed there every summer from April to October. He owned several speed boats over the years and then decided to purchase a party barge. It was known back then as a boat for old people, but not anymore. About 50% of people on Cobbossee now own one. Ray did a lot of entertaining on his barge for family and friends. The barge had a grill and a very popular toilet. He had the perfect name for his boat, “Happy Hour”. Many good times were had on his barge.

Ray loved his summer home on Cobbossee Lake and his winter home in Augusta. He always said he had the best of both worlds.

At his request, there will be no public visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, April 17, at 10 a.m., at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Northern Ave., Augusta. Burial will be at a later date.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.
