Churches throughout the U.S. plan to ring their bells for 11 minutes at 11 a.m. on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22, signifying the 11th hour of time remaining to address climate change.

The ceremonies are in keeping with the history of ringing church bells to signal a warning, and reflect a tradition started in Denmark around a climate change conference, according to a news release from Linda Woods, church member and event coordinator.

Members of the Universalist Unitarian Church of Waterville, 69 Silver St., will be ringing that church’s bell for 11 minutes on Earth Day as part of this worldwide event.
