Barbara Y. Michaud

WINTHROP – Barbara Y. Michaud, 96, peacefully left this earthly plain on April 19, 2023, to join her Father in Heaven and those she loved who went ahead of her. Barbara was a long time resident of Vassalboro before moving to Kennebec Plaza in Augusta and finally settling at Heritage Rehabilitation and Living Center in Winthrop where her body succumbed to her age. She was born on March 21, 1927 in Winslow to Clifford and Glendena (Taylor) York.

Barbara was a graduate of Winslow High School and worked primarily as a seamstress for Health-Tex. She was a dedicated Gardiner TOPS member and was crowned queen after reaching her health goals. She also volunteered at Inland Hospital in Waterville and the Cooperative Extension for many years.

Barbara was most proud of her membership to Hope Baptist Church in Manchester. She was one of the small handful of members that established the church in the Bennetts’ Augusta home in the mid 1970s and was pleased beyond belief to see the church constructed as its own building in 1987. She was then equally overjoyed that the church required an expansive reconstruction in 2008 because the weekly membership had grown to be so big.

Barbara was lovingly known as “The Candy Lady” for distributing sweet treats to children and adults alike at every weekly service. She was also known as a fierce prayer warrior who took it upon herself to converse frequently with the Lord on behalf of those in need. One of her favorite verses to live by was 1 Corinthians 16:13. It reads, “Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong.”

Mrs. Michaud was predeceased by her son, Wayne Michaud; her long-time friend and “adopted” daughter, Emma Graybell; her former husband, Robert J. Michaud; two brothers, Russell and Charles York and two sisters, Charlotte T. York and Beulah Wentworth.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Bev Michaud of Winslow; a brother, Robert S. York of Winslow; two grandchildren, Ira and Amber Michaud; six great-grandchildren, Ricky, Saphyre, Saber, Sofia, Ian, and Evelyn; as well as several nieces, nephews; and cousins.

At her request, there will be no public visiting hours. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 27 at 11 a.m. at Hope Baptist Church, Western Ave., Manchester. Burial will be at Pine Grove Cemetery, Waterville.

Arrangements are under the care of Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. Condolences, stories and photos may be shared through the funeral home website at: http://www.plummerfh.com.
