Sometimes I wonder what the child in “The Emperor’s New Clothes” would think about the way our society views the unborn. Is it a human being with rights to health care and protection from harm? Or is it a blob whose future is totally up to whatever country, state, or body it happens to be residing in before birth? Would the child be confused?

I certainly think so, because the ability to fully embrace both scenarios is an example of situational ethics at the extreme. That is why I am against L.D. 1619, which would expand our state’s current abortion laws to well beyond viability. It would make it easier for more babies’ lives to be taken away from them, even during the last months of pregnancy. And taking life away from human beings should never be made easier. Never.

A couple of days ago I watched a video of my first trimester granddaughter. She had the hiccups! And while I smiled with love and joy, and the incredible wonder of her existence, I was uncomfortably aware that not all unborn babies are viewed the same way. It grieved me. Because I believe that all unborn human babies deserve the right to life.

If you desire to help protect life here in Maine, please tell your legislators to reject L.D. 1619!
