Mark Onal Munn

ATHENS – Mark Onal Munn, 66, died unexpectedly on April 23, 2023. Mark was born on Dec. 20, 1956, in Hartland, Maine, to Onal and Catherine (Smith) Munn.

He graduated from Nokomis High School with the class of 1975, received a Degree in Animal Agricultural Technology from the University of Maine, and proudly served our country in the United States Air Force.

Mark spent many years farming and haying the old Poland homestead, where he made a home for his family. He retired from Oakhurst Dairy and was currently serving as the First Selectman for the Town of Athens, a position where he loved supporting his town and the community.

Mark was devoted to and loved his family deeply. Home was ā€œThe Hillā€ and there was no place he would rather be. Most of the time you could find him outdoors there, harvesting wood with his own sawmill, gardening, hunting, driving his tractor, tending his chickens or walking the land with his beloved dogs. He was a terrific musician, playing the banjo, guitar, and mandolin.

Mark loved music (especially Bluegrass) and picking with his friends at the Friday night jams in Harmony. One of his most precious memories was meeting Bill Monroe, ā€œThe Father of Bluegrassā€. Mark enjoyed being social and was quite the storyteller. Having a way with words, he could always find the right thing to say to make your day. He was a history buff and you might find him reading about Maine History or the Civil War while enjoying his beloved sweets with coffee. He was loved and respected by many for his kind and friendly nature.

He is survived by the love of his life, Mary Shorey; children, Hilary Pelletier (Ryan), Katie Munn (Justin), Nathan Munn (Satomi), Randy Humphrey, and Robby Humphrey; grandchildren, Gabe, Noah, Emi, Melody, Hunter, and Macy; siblings, Timothy Munn, Maureen Adams (Rick), Michael Munn (Norma), Steven Munn, Rebecca Munn (Bill), and Bruce Munn (Vivian); and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents.

A celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday, May 7, 2023, at the Harmony Community Center, 2 Mainstream Road, Harmony. The celebration will be a potluck so bring a dish and a story you think Mark would have enjoyed.
