The Maine Homeowner Assistance Fund Program may be able to help one struggling to keep up with mortgage payments or other housing costs because of COVID-19-related financial hardships.

The program is provided through MaineHousing, Maine State Housing Authority in Augusta.

The state received $50 million from the U.S. Treasury’s Homeowner Assistance Fund to provide relief to homeowners who suffered a financial hardship because of the coronavirus pandemic, according to a news release Shiloh LaFreniere, Jay’s town manager.

The HAF program can provide eligible homeowners up to $50,000 in benefits.

These benefits can be used for a variety of expenses or past due bills, including mortgage payments for Maine homeowners, or payments on taxes, sewer or other utilities.
