
The Monmouth Academy Academic Decathlon Team, coached by Cathy Foyt and Scott Foyt, tied for first place in the Super Quiz and second place overall in the Maine Academic Decathlon Championship on March 18.
The Monmouth team qualified and was due to compete in the National Academic Decathlon online Championship in April.
Academic Decathlon is comprised of A, B and C students, who study together as a team for a year and then compete in 10 (decathlon), different categories: Art, Economics, Essay, Interview, Language/Literature, Mathematics, Music, Science, Social Science and Speech.
The overall theme for Academic Decathlon changes every year. For example, last year’s theme was Water: A Most Essential Resource, this year’s them is The American Revolution, and next year’s theme will be Technology and Humanity.
This year, team members who won the following medals:
HONOR DIVISION
Holly Hunt — Gold: Art, Speech, Economics, Science, Essay, Social Science, Music, Math and Literature; Bronze, Interview; and Highest Team Scorer, Highest Scoring Honor Student in Maine and Highest Scoring Overall Student in Maine. Hunt also set a team record by winning nine gold medals and one bronze medal in the 10 Decathlon categories.
June Foyt — Silver: Speech and Science; and Bronze: Literature and Economics.
Samantha Barker — Silver: Interview; and Bronze: Economics and Science.
SCHOLASTIC DIVISION
Olivia Degan — Gold: Essay and Math; Silver: Science; and third-highest Scoring scholastic student in Maine.
Allyson Lewis — Gold: Economics; Silver: Interview; and Bronze: Speech and Music.
Kam St. Clair — Silver: Economics and Literature; and Bronze: Social Science.
VARSITY DIVISION
Ostin Hasenfus-Smith — Gold: Essay, Interview and Math; Silver: Economics; Bronze: Social Science; and highest scoring varsity student in Maine.
Christina Bond — Gold: Economics; Silver: Essay, Science and Music; Bronze: Social Science, Literature, Interview and Art; and third-highest scoring varsity student in Maine.
Sam Schultz — Silver: Speech, Science, Essay and Social Science.
ALTERNATE DIVISION
Nate Lewis — Gold: Math, Literature and Music; and Silver: Science, Social Science.
