LEEDS — The Leeds Historical Society plans to present the program “Geores’ Legacy in Leeds” at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 20, at the Leeds History Center on Route 106.
In 1952, about 100 local people signed a petition requesting help to organize a church in Leeds. Little did they realize the lasting impact that Rev. Carl Geores and his wife, Melva, would spark in the people and town. It still resonates today, according to a news release from Pam Bell, society board member.
Besides exploring their background, what led them to Leeds, and their vision, the society will cover the changes they brought about in food availability, pre-school education, affordable housing, the organizing of the Rural Community Action Ministry (RCAM) and greater health opportunities for Leeds and the surrounding area.
This is the first in-building programming at the History Center since its complete renovations. Parking is available behind the History Center in the town’s parking lots.
Refreshments will be served after the program. The society always appreciates donations.
