AUGUSTA — Fort Western Living History Museum & National Historic Landmark invites children of all ages interested in local history and museum stewardship to register for one of Fort Western’s Summer Youth Programs: Apprenticeship Program (ages 8-11) or the Junior Interpreter Program (ages 12 and up).

These five one-week sessions are as follows: Week 1, June 26-30; Week 2, July 10-14, Week 3, July 17-21; Week 4, July 24-28; Week 5, July 31-Aug. 4. Weeks 1 and 3 are already minimally filled exclusively with junior interpreters.

Apprentices will explore daily life at home in the 18th century, the varied world of work such as blacksmithing, and storekeeping, the life of a French & Indian War soldier, and what children
and adults did for entertainment. Apprenticeship graduates are eligible to participate in the Junior Interpreter Program once they turn 12. Junior interpreters will assist with the Apprenticeship Program, learn about collections management and how to interpret the history of the fort, develop the necessary skills to demonstrate 18th century hands-on activities to the public and learn how to conduct research through reading and deciphering original documents.

The brochure and outline are available online at oldfortwestern.org as well as registration forms.

People also can pick up the registration paperwork at the Fort Western Administrative Office in Augusta City Center, 16 Cony St. They should call if they would like the forms emailed or mailed.

Space is limited, so people should register as soon as possible to ensure you get their desired week.
