Audrey Marie (Christensen) Plourd

BLOOMFIELD, Conn. – Audrey Marie (Christensen) Plourd, 96, of Bloomfield, Conn., a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother died peacefully surrounded by family Thursday, May 11 at Hartford Hospital.

Born April 5, 1927 in Hartford, Conn., she was married for 67 years to Richard P. Plourd who died in in April 2022. Daughter of Harold and Alice (Caya) Christensen, she grew up on Ardmore Road in West Hartford, attending Morley School, Plant Jr. High School, and proudly graduating from William H. Hall High School in the class of 1945.

She met her future husband while both were living on New Park Avenue in West Hartford, Conn. They married in 1955 and shortly after, moved into the home they built together on Coventry Lake in Coventry, Conn. They moved to West Hartford, Conn. in 1960 and raised all four children there. She often said, “The only thing I ever wanted to do was raise children,” and so she devoted her time and love to doing just that. As the kids grew, she returned to the work place and was the manager of The Tie Shop in the WestFarms Mall for many years.

Upon retirement in 1985, Audrey and Richard moved permanently to a farm they had purchased as a vacation home in Anson back in 1967. Through the years they worked tirelessly together lovingly restoring the home to the point where it was featured in This Old House magazine. The home, lovingly referred to as “The Farm”, was the center of family gatherings and parties for many years. While living there, she opened Audrey’s Antiques buying, selling, and collecting the antiques she loved so much.

She was the center and heart of her family. Kind, caring, loving and always quick with a smile. She had the uncanny ability to recall poems, old songs and nursery rhymes and happily recite them to everyone’s delight. A talented seamstress, Audrey would sew many of her own clothes as well as clothes for her mother and daughter. Throughout her life she loved to write, draw, and paint. Together with her carpenter grandfather, Stanislaw Caya, she carefully painted the hand-crafted items he made in his basement shop. Later in life at the farm, she hand painted rugs on the dining room floor and front hallway. Her passion continued while at Seabury as she was an active participant in painting classes and a writer’s workshop.

A devoted Catholic, she would say the rosary every day, adding a long list of names of loved ones who had passed or were in need, all by memory. Her love for family and friends was powerful. She made friends wherever she went and those fortunate enough to be in her circle were blessed by her company.

She is survived by her four children, Thomas Hogerty of South Windsor, Conn., Mitchell Plourd, and his wife Debra of Madison, Patricia Downes and her husband David of South Windsor, Conn. and William Plourd and his wife Alecia of Canton, Conn; her eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren; as well as her younger sister, Andrea Gudzunas of Bloomfield, Conn.

There will be a service held in the Chapel at Seabury in Bloomfield, Conn., June 24 at 11 a.m. She will be buried together with her beloved husband, Richard on Aug. 5 at 10 a.m. at Fairview Cemetery West Hartford, Conn. with a reception to follow, and as Audrey would have it, all are welcomed.
