Robert K. Thayer

WINTHROP – Robert K. Thayer, 94, passed away on May 17, 2023, after a brief illness.

He was born in Lewiston on Sept. 20, 1928, to the late Roger D. and Yvonne (LeClerc) Thayer. Robert graduated from Edward-Little High School in 1946 and received his certificate in systems operator later on.

He enlisted into the United States Navy in 1946 and served on the USS Coral Sea during WWII. His second enlistment was in Kodiak, Alaska during the Korean War. Robert was honorably discharged from the military in 1952.

After the military, he went on to become a systems dispatcher for CMP where he was employed for 35 years and retired in 1988. After retirement, Robert enjoyed spending his time working at Springbrook Golf Club.

Robert was active in Auburn with coaching Little League and Babe Ruth. He was a member of the Kora Temple, Masonic Lodge-Ashlar in Auburn, the CMP Oldtimers Club and the Springbrook Golf Club. Also, a past member of the Lions Club as well as Alfred W. Maxwell, Jr., Post #40 and the Hillandalers Snowmobile Club, all located in Winthrop.

In his free time, Robert deeply enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping. He was also a Maine Guide. If he wasn’t spending time with family, Bob would be golfing, snowmobiling or gardening. He was an artist when it came to woodworking and made different types of clocks and furniture.

In addition to his first wife, Betty, Robert was predeceased by his second wife, Anita Ramsdell Thayer; and brother, Richard P. Thayer.

Robert is survived by his three children, Robert Thayer and wife Kathy of Auburn, Mark Thayer and companion June Goucher of Winthrop, Vicki Thayer-Adams and husband Alfred of Winthrop; grandchildren, Stephanie (Bob) Easter and children Jeff, Noah and Connor all of Mt. Vernon; Katlyn (Matt) Hodgson and Lily of Saco; Taylor Thayer (Tyler) and Clara of Winthrop; Ryan (Marissa) Adams and children Marshall and Penelope of Fayette; and Shannon Thayer-Adams of Winthrop.

Robert’s visiting hours will be held at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop on Wednesday May 24 from 5 to 7 p.m. A graveside service at Gracelawn Memorial Park, 980 Turner St., Auburn will be on Wednesday May 31 at 11 a.m., where Robert will receive military honors. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
