The town of Sidney’s Memorial Day Parade Committee is set to hold a parade and program starting at 10 a.m. Monday, May 29, to remember the sacrifice made by fallen service members as well as to honor and thank all veterans and some of community volunteers.
David Smith, a Vietnam veteran, will be the parade’s grand marshal, according to a news release from Jeff Frost of the parade committee.
Veterans are encouraged to walk in the parade along with several other groups and individuals. Some antique cars will be in the parade and may provide transportation for veterans who do not wish to walk.
Parade participants will assemble on Transfer Station Drive starting at 9:30 a.m. From there the parade will travel one-fifth of a mile to the memorial site by the town office on the Middle Road. Here the main program will take place. Lt. Col. Ian Hepburn will be the master of ceremonies.
Following the formal program, the Boy Scout Troop 401 will have a barbecue and treats for sale. Louis Fontaine, featured speaker, will have signed copies of his book, “Reveille at 6:15: A Franco-American’s Journey Through World War II,” available for purchase.
Sidney first responders will have a static display of their equipment, and the Sidney Historical Society will have an open house in the Grange Hall basement.
Chairs will be provided, but individuals are encouraged bring their own chairs. Indoor and outdoor restroom facilities will be available.
In the event of rain, the program will be held upstairs in the Grange Hall on Middle Road.
