Moira Elizabeth Hastings Fuller

WINTHROP – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing on May 24, 2023, of Moira Elizabeth Hastings Fuller (née McDonnell).

She was born on Nov. 8, 1935, on the wild Atlantic coast of western Ireland, in Barnarusheen, Clifden, County Galway. The eldest of 10 children, she grew up by the sea on the family farm amid the heather covered fields and stone-walled paths. At the age of 18, she emigrated with her younger sister Ann to the United States aboard the U.S.S. America and settled in Brooklyn, New York. Her first job was as a keypunch operator for Con Edison.

She moved with her family to Winthrop, in 1971. The coast, lobsters, and fresh outdoor environment of Maine perfectly suited Moira, as it reminded her of her youth in Ireland. In Maine she enjoyed a career in finance, working at Depositors Trust and then Kennebec Savings Bank, from which she retired after over twenty years of service. Upon retiring, she became a bank trustee. Moira was very active in the Central Maine community, including the BPW, the Kennebec Garden Club, and the Readfield and Winthrop Historical Societies.

In 2001, Moira married Robert G. Fuller, Jr., of Manchester, Maine. Both engaged in local philanthropic work, contributing generously to the Kennebec Valley YMCA, Winthrop library, Pine Tree Camp, Transfiguration Hermitage, Blaine House, and Maine General Medical Center, for which the rehabilitation suite is named in her honor. In 2013, she received the Claddagh Award from the Maine Irish Heritage center.

Besides being an avid cross-country skier, hiker, and flower gardener, Moira also was an accomplished oil painter. Her paintings of Maine landscapes and seascapes are at once captivating, raw, and soothing. She also loved travelling, taking trips with Robert to Russia, Europe, Aruba, and throughout the United States. Of course, she most enjoyed her pilgrimages back to the west coast of Ireland to spend time with her family.

Moira is predeceased by her first husband Thomas M. Hastings, and her brothers Thomas and Michael McDonnell.

She is survived by her husband Robert, her siblings Brid McGrane (Gay), Ann Ashworth (Ken), Patricia Keane, Patrick Joseph (Bernie), Kay McDonaugh, Majel, and Mary Geraghty (Frank), and her children Thomas Hastings (Karen), Diane Hastings (Frank Panopoulos), Lawrence Hastings (Ann), and Linda Frost (Cliff), her grandchildren, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
