Samuel Goodspeed, 18, of Wilton, received Scouting’s highest honor, the Eagle Scout rank, during a ceremony May 20 held at the Cascade Brook School in Farmington.

The son of Nichole and Adam Goodspeed, he is a 2022 graduate of Mt. Blue High School.

He attends the University of Maine at Orono, where he is studying mechanical engineering technology, and completed all requirements for the award last July. He is a member of Scout Troop 546, which is chartered by the Roderick-Crosby American Legion Post No. 28.

During the ceremony, Wilton selectman and former state Sen. Tom Saviello, also an Eagle Scout, shared the Eagle Scout obligation. “The foremost responsibility of an Eagle Scout is to live with honor. To an Eagle Scout, honor is the foundation of all character. They know that ‘A Scout is trustworthy’ is the very first point of the Scout Law for a good reason,” Saviello said, according to a news release from Chuck Mahaleris, district chairman for the Kennebec Valley District of Scouting.

One of the major requirements for Eagle is to provide leadership for a project that benefits the community. Goodspeed built and/or rehabilitated a collection of dilapidated benches on the Cascade Brook School grounds, spread throughout the playgrounds and sports fields.

Goodspeed’s Scoutmaster, Gearry Judkins, said, “Sam, your parents have undoubtedly been your primary source of help and strength. No one will ever know the unnumbered acts of self-sacrifice from your mother. I’d like your mother to pin the Eagle medal on your uniform.”

Afterwards, Goodspeed in turn presented an Eagle Scout Mother’s Pin and Eagle Lapel Pin to his parents.
