Maranacook Community High School has announced its top 10 seniors for the class of 2023, with a three-way tie for valedictorian.

Jordan Carr of Manchester, daughter of Kim Bowie and Torey Carr, is one valedictorian. She participated in basketball and lacrosse during her four years of high school and was also a captain. She enjoyed helping out with the community youth sports programs. She refereed and helped coach youth girls basketball for four years.

Carr volunteered her time at MaineGeneral Medical Center, communicating with the families of patients. Along with sports and volunteering, she participated in extracurricular groups.

She served in the Student Senate for two years, first as a member of the School Spirit committee and currently as the secretary of the Student Council. She also was a member of the National Honors Society and the Rho Kappa Honors Society for three years.

Carr has been accepted into the Honors Program and Women’s Leadership Program at Bentley University and plans to attend in the fall to pursue a degree in finance.

Allie LaBelle of Mount Vernon, the daughter of Lacie Levesque and Timothey LaBelle, is also one of the valedictorians.

She has been a member of the varsity field hockey, basketball and softball teams all four years of high school and a captain for all three sports.

LaBelle, an active member in the school and community, is the vice president of the National Honors Society and treasurer of the Student Council. She has also been member of the Outreach Committee in the Student Senate, the Tri-M Music Honors Society, the Rho Kappa Honors Society, and the knitting club.

Along with sports and clubs she has volunteered around 100 hours to youth sports in her community, by helping coach in the weeklong basketball camps and the first youth field hockey camp at Maranacook.

LaBelle plans to attend the University of Maine in the fall to pursue a degree in civil engineering.

Lina Martinez Nocito of Mount Vernon, daughter of Jenny and Frank Martinez Nocito, is also co-valedictorian.

She has been a member of Maranacook’s GSTA, Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society, Civil Rights Team, and National Honor Society, and was a Civics Unplugged Fellow junior year.

Nocito competed on varsity cross-country (captain), Nordic skiing, track, and Math Team. In addition, she has been a member of the Young Writer’s Workshop for  six years.

She plans to attend the University of Maine at Farmington and earn a double degree in English and creative writing with a minor in art.

The other top 10 students are listed alphabetically.

Jaden Bryant, who lives in Winthrop with parents Kristin McLaren and Andrew Bryant, has been an active participant in Maranacook theatre productions, playing a plague doctor, Prince Eric, several ancient Greek historical and mythological figures, Sir Harry, and Wadsworth.

Bryant has been a tenor in chamber choir every year, played clarinet in concert band every year except for sophomore and junior years (due to COVID), and joined the jazz band this year playing the tenor saxophone. Bryant performed in the SATB District 3 and All State ensembles this year.

Bryant has been a part of National Honor Society, civil rights team, and tennis. Over the summers and throughout the school year, Bryant has volunteered at Camp Mechuwana and Capital Area New Mainers Project. This spring, Bryant received the seal of biliteracy in French.

This upcoming year, Bryant plans to head to the University of Ottawa in Canada to study chemistry.

Mary Hatt of Mount Vernon is the daughter of Gregory and Deborah Hatt. She has been involved with both the arts and sports. She is a member of the chamber singers, jazz band, and band, and has been in both District and All State Choirs.

She participated in the Maranacook musicals, most notably “The Little Mermaid” and “Once Upon a Mattress.” She was a captain of both the girl’s Nordic ski team and the girl’s tennis team.

Hatt is also president of the National Honor Society, Rho Kappa and Tri M Music Honor Society.

In the fall, she plans to attend the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts.

Esmé Jamison of Mount Vernon is the daughter of Mark and Amber Jamison.

She has been a member of varsity field hockey and varsity softball throughout all her years of high school. She also played three years of high school basketball prior to her senior year.

Jamison has been an active member of many groups and clubs including Rho Kappa, National Honors Society, Student Senate, Student Council, knitting club, and Sources of Strength.

She has also been a student member on the Regional School Unit 38 board as well as the senior representative for the Student Council. She has been awarded both the Maine Principals Award and the DAR Good Citizen Program Award.

In the fall, Jamison plans to attend the University of New England to major in marine science.

Sophie Marr of Readfield is the daughter of Jim and Stacey Marr. She is a member of the National Honors Society, where she serves as secretary, and an acting member of Student Senate, Rho Kappa Honors Society, and the knitting club.

She has been a part of the cross-country running, field hockey and Nordic ski teams, becoming a ski team captain her senior year.

Marr has volunteered with organizations such as Ironman Triathlons and the Commonground Fair, and has spent the majority of her high school summers as a summer camp counselor.

This fall, she plans to attend the University of New England to pursue a degree in nursing.

Sophia Tweedie of Manchester is the daughter of Brian and Jennifer Tweedie. She is a member of the National Honor Society and co-head of the Student Senate Wellness Committee.

She was a captain of the girls soccer team and helped bring home the State Championship title for the first time in program history. She made first team on the KVAC team and was awarded the KVAC All Academic award. She also played lacrosse.

Tweedie has volunteered in elementary schools as well as collected donations for the humane society.

She plans to attend the University of Maine-Orono to pursue a degree in nursing.

Addie Watson of Readfield is the daughter of Matt and Diane Watson. She has been an active Student Senate and Council member as the student wellness committee head. She has also been a member of the National Honors Society for three years.

Additionally, Watson has been a four-year varsity member of the soccer team and was captain her senior year. She was part of the team that won states her junior year and regionals her senior year.

She has also been awarded KVAC Player of the Year, KVAC All-Academic, and Class C South All-Star. She participated in lacrosse as a player and manager while being captain her senior year.

This fall, Watson plans to attend the University of New England to major in medical biology and continue her soccer career.

Shylah Woodford of Readfield is the daughter of Adam and Michelle Woodford. She participated in varsity field hockey and softball and plays softball year-round.

She has been a member of the Interact Club, National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, and Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society, as well as a Writing Center tutor.

Woodford participated in National History Day at the national level, as well as earning the Margaret Chase Smith Award for her documentary. She finished first place in the local SkillsUSA competition for basic nursing skills and was awarded CATC Professional of the Month for September.

She received other honors for her academic achievements, such as the Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Award through the University of Rochester, finishing first in the Maine Native American Essay Competition, and AAPPL Spanish Biliteracy proficiency.

In the community, she volunteered at Little Pine’s Preschool, the Dempsey Challenge, and local youth softball teams.

In the fall, Woodford plans to continue her education in nursing.
