ST. ALBANS — SKILLS, Inc. has been awarded two grants, totaling nearly $1 million, that will allow the organization to expand pre-employment and driver’s education offerings through pilot programs in Somerset, Penobscot and Kennebec counties.
The two grants were awarded by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services for a 20-month period, during which time these pilot programs will operate through SKILLS. SKILLS will also coordinate with other organizations and potential employers to reach a broader population and increase employer connections with these programs, according to a news release from Ana Hluska, director of development with SKILLS.
“Transportation and employment are both avenues to foster independence for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, autism, and traumatic brain injuries (IDD/A, TBI). SKILLS is grateful to receive these two grants and we look forward to implementing both pilot programs in the coming months. By providing these accessible, inclusive programs we can empower individuals to lead more fulfilling lives,” said Kristin Overton, executive director of SKILLS, Inc.
Pre-employment is a foundation for someone with IDD/A, TBI in their movement toward obtaining a job. It aims to bridge the gap that exists in current employment programs by providing opportunities for increasing confidence before individuals begin seeking employment.
In the program, participants will explore their own skills and interests, increase job readiness and build interviewing skills. The SKILLS Pre-Employment Program will provide several curriculums depending on individual needs and will be led by its in-house pre-employment specialist.
Individuals with I/DDA and TBI often face barriers to transportation, which create difficulties in living a fully integrated and independent daily life.
The SKILLS Driver’s Education Program will be offered to people who need either specialized learning or access to a training vehicle for the full 80 hours of practice time required to earn a Maine driver’s license. Instructors will be certified Direct Support Professionals and Licensed Class A Driver’s Education Instructors. Under this pilot program, a driver education coordinator will be hired by SKILLS.
