Noreen (Doherty) Alvarado

BRUNSWICK – Noreen (Doherty) Alvarado, 81, died peacefully and without pain Wednesday, June 14, 2023, surrounded by loved ones at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough following a long illness.

She was born in Queens, N.Y. on April 17, 1942, a daughter of the late Capt. Edward J. Doherty, MD (retired) and Nora R. (Coleman) Doherty.

She was a graduate of Our Lady of Wisdom Academy in New York, N.Y. and earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing at Mary Immaculate School of Nursing in New York, N.Y.

Prior to marrying and raising five children, Noreen was a delivery room nurse. After her children had grown, Noreen returned to nursing, and was employed as the school nurse for the Brandeis Hebrew Academy in Lawrence, N.Y. for two decades. She was a communicant for five decades at Notre Dame Roman Catholic Parish in New Hyde Park, N.Y. and was a fierce proponent of Catholic school education.

Mrs. Alvarado was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Dr. Cristobal C. Alvarado; her brother, Edward Doherty and her sister, Karen Lamay.

She is survived by her children Dr. Cristobal G. Alvarado and his wife Genvieve of Readfield, Dr. Stephen P. Alvarado and his wife Pam of Bethlehem, Pa., Edward R. Alvarado of New York, N.Y., Mary Zubrinsky and her husband Todd of Easton, Conn. and Noreen Patient, Esq. and her husband Greg of Brunswick.

Noreen will be lovingly remembered by her 11 grandchildren, Sebastian, Avery, Luke, Isabel, Matthew, Elizabeth, Kennedy, Sydney, Maya, Olivia and Lila; as well as several nieces, nephews; and cousins.

Noreen had many, many friends; she was particularly grateful to Maryanne Droskoski Iandoli – a lifelong friend from nursing school – who was a source of tremendous support in Noreen’s last months.

A memorial service will be held later in July in New York, N.Y.
