A Smithfield man was killed Saturday when the vehicle he was driving veered off a road in Norridgewock and struck a car parked in a driveway, police said.
Gerald Perri, 54, was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck off Mechanic Street, according to a news release from Chief Deputy Michael Mitchell of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.
Police said the crash was reported at 3:14 a.m. and sheriff’s Deputy Jeffrey Brann responded, finding that Perri’s gray 2014 Dodge Avenger had been traveling north when the vehicle veered off the right side of the road and struck an unattended blue 2012 Mazda sedan parked in a private driveway. Perri, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was alone in his vehicle and was ejected from the impact, police said.
“The crash remains under investigation to determine what led up to the crash and why the vehicle left the roadway,” Mitchell’s release stated, “although excessive speed appears to have been a contributing factor.”
The Norridgewock Fire Department and emergency crews from Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan also responded.
