WATERVILLE — Mid-Maine Technical Center has announced its June celebrities.

Waterville Senior High School graduate Hayden Robinson of Waterville spent two years at Mid-Maine Technical Center studying the precise craft of finish carpentry. For a career that requires materials cut to exacting standards and where a mistake less than the size of an inch could be catastrophic, his meticulous nature is the perfect “fit,” according to a news release from the technical center.

Surrounded by routers, table saws, bandsaws, drill presses, jointers and planers, Robinson finds joy in bringing harmony to his building projects by following blueprints, careful consideration of available materials, and his eye for detail.

Robinson’s favorite project was an heirloom chest built from pine. He was the first student in the program’s history to complete the complicated project which included assembly using hand-cut dovetails.

Robinson’s hard work in the MMTC classroom led to an eight-week internship at Duratherm Window Company in Vassalboro, a custom-made hardwood windows and doors manufacturer. Robinson spent time on the shop floor, learning from the team and putting his skills to work in a real-world environment. Robinson applied to Duratherm while still in high school, and accepted a full-time position.

Robinson, a 2022 inductee of the National Technical Honor Society MMTC, was recognized as student of the month in the Finish Carpentry program in both years at MMTC. He looks forward to building a career at Duratherm and one day traveling the world with his crafting skills.

Shorey, of Vassalboro, starred in this year’s promotional video to encourage prospective students to enroll.

“My favorite thing about this program is editing videos and recording voice-overs,” Shorey notes. “I believe that since I enjoy these so much, they are what I do best in.”

Shorey, who organizes clips and weaves them together seamlessly, also enjoys recording the script and experimenting with different inflections, pulling out a multitude of personalities to determine the right direction for a clip.

Shorey, recognized as MMTC student of the month for December, plans to attend the University of Maine at Farmington in the fall.
