The 12th annual Travis Mills Foundation Miles for Mills Memorial Day Weekend 5K, presented by New Balance Foundation, drew more than 1,300 registrants and raised $160,000 for the Travis Mills Foundation.

The event was held May 28 at Brunswick Landing, the former Brunswick Naval Air Station. Eight post-9/11 recalibrated veteran families attending the Travis Mills Foundation Veterans Retreat participated in the race as part of Memorial Day Weekend programming, according to a news release from the foundation.

Sam Angevine, 21, of Washington, D.C., was the race winner. Top Fundraiser was Patricia Haggerty, age 72 ($4,540) and Team Haggerty Hollow ($5,525) of Otisfield.

The 5K was open to participants both virtually and in-person. Travis Mills Foundation Ambassador Shauna Barnes participated in the race, her first 5K, from her residence in Cable, Wisconsin. She completed the 3.1 miles over the course of a five-day period.

“Don’t ever let anyone tell you that you can’t do something you want to do,” Barnes said. “If it is important enough to you, there aren’t creative ways to adapt just about anything, so you can get it done.”

“This is why we offer the [Miles for Mills 5K] race virtually,” said Staff Sgt. (Ret.) Travis Mills. “For recalibrated veterans like Shauna who are unable to come and participate in person, they are able to participate virtually. It’s truly incredible to see individuals who represent the Travis Mills Foundation breaking barriers and living life off the sidelines.”

Recalibrated veteran Amanda Seward of Williamsburg, Virginia, ran the 5K for the first time on a new running prosthetic blade. Travis Mills Foundation Programming Coordinator Megan Cormier ran alongside Seward with her regular prosthetic in case she wanted to switch, but Seward completed the entire race on the blade.

“Participants like Amanda who have the dedication to push past their injuries and limitations are inspiration to everyone who participated in the event,” Hemphill said.
