NEWPORT – Esther Temple, 89, formerly of Palmyra, died July 7, 2023 at a Lewiston healthcare facility.

She was born July 19, 1933 in Newport, a daughter of John and Isabella (Colby) Pinkham. She was a graduate of Newport High School and married Fred Temple in 1950.

She was a member of the Church of The Nazarene in Pittsfield since 1966, where she served on the church board, was church treasurer and a Sunday School teacher. She was a bookkeeper and town clerk in Pittsfield starting in 1973 and after retirement, spent many hours volunteering for the Town of Palmyra. Esther also enjoyed camping and fishing with Fred.

She is survived by two sons, James and wife Anna Temple of Casco, and Paul Temple of Augusta, two daughters, Thelma and husband Stephen Low of Dixfield and Cynthia and husband Mark Gould of Rumford; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Judy and her husband, the Rev. Robert Herring of Dexter.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Crosby and Neal, 117 Main St., Newport, where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 14 with the Rev. Robert Herring officiating. Burial will be in the Palmyra Village Cemetery.
