Louis L. Poulin

AUGUSTA – Louis L. Poulin, 93, of Augusta, passed away on July 15, 2023 after a long hard fought battle with Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia at the Woodlands Senior Living Memory Care unit in Hallowell.

He was born in Augusta on May 3, 1930, the son of Louis J. Poulin and Edna (Martin) Poulin.

Mr. Poulin graduated from Cony High School in May of 1948 and joined the U.S. Navy that June.

After boot camp in Great Lakes, Mich., he went to Washington D.C. for training. During this time he marched in President Truman’s inauguration parade.

Following his military graduation, Mr. Poulin was assigned to the U.S.S. Hamul in Plymouth, England. When the Korean Conflict broke out, they returned to Virginia to be re-outfitted and traveled through the Panama Canal to San Diego, Calif. He served on the Hamul, which was stationed in Japan, until Jan. 1952. He served on the U.S.S. Piedmont until his discharge from the U.S. Navy in June 1952.

Lou was married to Eileen M. Savage on Feb. 5, 1952 at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Augusta.

Following is discharge from the Navy, he attended Colburn Classical Institute and graduated from the University of Maine at Orono in 1957 with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.

He was employed at the Maine Department of Transportation from 1957-1986. Mr. Poulin also worked at Dufresne Henry until 1998 and at his brother John’s insurance company.

Mr. Poulin was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church of St. Michael Parish and was also a collector for many, many years at his church.

He was a member and Past Grand Knight of Abnaki Council #334 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus, and a Past Faithful Navigator of Abnaki Assembly #346 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. Lou was a member of the V.F.W. Post #887 and the Marine Corps League Detachment #599.

Mr. Poulin, aka “Dad” “Uncle Lou” “Pa” and “Papa” was very much a family man. He made sure his family had everything they needed and that his children enjoyed special times as well. There were annual visits to the coast and Bear Pond Park, snowmobiling and camping trips, going to Dairy Queen and A&W Root Beer was always a treat.

During the year of 1977, he designed and built the family’s camp on the Upper Narrows Pond. Family members helped but were always under his strict supervision. Our “Blue Camp” is now enjoyed by a fourth generation and new memories are made every year. We all enjoy swimming, tasting marshmallows, boating, fishing or just relaxing and rocking on the porch listening to the loons. It is our number one family vacation spot – thanks to Papa.

His passing leaves us all with heavy hearts and shoes that will be impossible to fill. He will be remembered for always having a strong sense of right and wrong and for guiding us all to follow that path.

Although he encouraged us to stand on our own, we all knew he would be there if we stumbled.

Son-in-law, Butch, was still in his teens when he met “Papa”. Today he says “He was the best father he ever had”. He gave us all the strength to carry on until we meet again.

Mr. Poulin was predeceased by his wife of 69 years, Eileen M. Poulin; a sister, Pauline Tardiff and her husband Armand, and brothers Donald Poulin and his wife Gloria and M. Lester Poulin of Florida.

He is survived by his three children, two daughters, Suzanne Ross and her husband Butch and Jane Poulin and her partner Kathy Patterson of Richmond, and a son, Jim Poulin and his wife Therese of Augusta; six grandchildren, Autumn Quick and her husband Ralph, Shane Ross and his wife Joely, Zachary Poulin, Ethan Poulin, Dan Webber and his wife Amanda, Kelly Petela and Matt; nine great-grandchildren, Zoe Hewlett and husband Ethan, Tristan Quick and fiancée Brooke Gagnon, Samuel Quick, Madison Ross, Acadia-Louise Ross, Madisin Poulin, Torrie Webber, Mylee Petela and Reese Petela.

He is also survived by his brother, John Poulin and his wife Carol, his sisters-in-law, Christine Van Horn of Vermont and Ann Poulin of Florida; as well as several nieces, nephews; and cousins.

Lou’s family would like to thank all the staff at Woodlands for providing loving care over the past 5 1/2 years – Louisa, Diana, Katie, Morgan, Heidi, Marlene, Aisha and many more. Most of all we thank his dancing, singing Valentine, Karen. Dad always lit up whenever she was around – his favorite girl!
