Lloyd A. Conners

RIPLEY – It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, Lloyd Conners. He died peacefully on Saturday Aug. 5, 2023, at Mercy Hospital in Portland, surrounded by his loving family.

Lloyd was born Oct. 29, 1946, in Farmington to Ralph Conners and Ruth (Wacome) Conners. He grew up in Anson and graduated from Madison Memorial High School in 1965. In 1967 he married his high school sweetheart, Nancy (Bailey) Conners, and they shared a loving commitment to each other for over 55 years.

Lloyd spent much of his professional career serving others. He enrolled in the Navy in 1967 and served as a helicopter mechanic for four years during the Vietnam War. He was awarded a Bronze Star. Upon his discharge in 1971, he enrolled at the University of Maine at Farmington where he received his degree in Education, and a few years later, his Master’s in Education from the University of Maine at Orono. In 1973 he began teaching Biology at Dexter Regional High School where he remained for over 30 years. Outside of the classroom, Lloyd spent decades as a Varsity Baseball, JV Boys and Girls Basketball Coach, and a Freshman Football Coach. He loved to catch up with former players and reminisce about the moments on and off the baseball fields and basketball courts.

Throughout his life, he was an avid outdoorsman, and he spent many hours hunting deer with his grandfather, father, brother, and son. This continued for many years into his retirement with his brother, Glenn. Lloyd also spent countless hours fishing at Ragged Lake with his best friend, Ed Guiski. Kayaking on local ponds with Nancy was another source of enjoyment. Lloyd was always organizing his time and next project in the form of a list. He took great pride in his home, and over the years, he maintained a bountiful vegetable garden, an orchard filled with fruit, and various pieces of beautiful furniture that he crafted for his family. He also spent 46 years harvesting wood from his own wood lot to heat his home. Lloyd was a baseball fan for life. He became a Brooklyn Dodgers fan as a kid, and he happily saw his Dodgers win the World Series in 2020.

To Lloyd, family was everything. It was common for him to spend hours driving from his house to attend his oldest grandchildren’s games. He was consistently in the stands and was always their most loyal and proud fan. His youngest grandchild, Cole, was a source of great joy for him during the pandemic years when he spent many hours interacting with him on Facetime. Lloyd was always a phone call away and willing to chat about anything.

Lloyd is survived by his wife of 55 years, Nancy; his daughter Tracie Smith (Jesse); his son Nathan (Mollie); his grandchildren, Caroline Smith, Conner Smith, and Cole Conners; his brother Glenn Conners (Tammy); his sister, Christine Locke; and several nieces and nephews.
