Women’s barbershop choruses to perform in Lewiston Aug. 23

LEWISTON — Music Brings Us Together, a performance to benefit the Lewiston Senior Citizens, will be held from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, at the Lewiston Armory, 65 Central Ave., in Lewiston.

Performing live on stage are the Mollyockett women’s barbershop chorus and the Maine-ly Harmony women’s barbershop chorus, along with their quartets, according to a news release from Lea Davis with Maine-ly Harmony chorus.

Tickets cost $15 and are available at the door or between 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at the Lewiston Armory.

Lewiston Senior Citizens is a program for seniors 50 and older. Bimonthly membership meetings offer lunch and a speaker discussing topics pertinent to seniors, as well as activities. A monthly newsletter also informs members of upcoming events and trips. To become a member, call 207-513-3059.

The Mollyockett Chorus, based in Norway, was organized in 1996 and is a chapter of Harmony Inc., an international women’s barbershop organization. Under the direction of Simon Smith of Bethel, the chorus, comprising women from all over the Lakes Region, sings popular music, mostly from early- to mid-20th century. This spring it opened the season at the Bear Mountain Music Hall in Waterford. Women who love to sing are welcome at chorus rehearsals, which take place at 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays at First Unitarian Universalist Church, 479 Main St., Norway. Maine-ly Harmony, directed by Kathy Greason, also sings the barbershop style of four-part harmony. Previously, the group has opened the legislative session at the State House in Augusta with the national anthem and participated in the Togus Veterans Administration’s 9/11 commemorative service. The chorus brings music to residents of retirement, veterans’ and nursing homes throughout the state. Women of all ages are welcome to join in rehearsals from 6:30-9 p.m. Wednesdays at the Randolph Methodist Church, 16 Asbury St.
