Milton “Milt” Wright

READFIELD – Milton “Milt” Wright of Readfield passed away on July 17, 2023, at the age of 84. He was born in Orrington, the eldest and only son of Henry Roger Wright and Ursule Madeline Spruce Wright.

He graduated from Brewer High School and Husson College. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea. Upon his return from overseas, he taught high school in Valley Stream, N.Y. and Danforth. After leaving the classroom, he worked for the Maine Teachers Association in many capacities and retired as the Executive Director.

Milt was very involved with outdoor activities. He hiked Mount Katahdin for 58 consecutive years and enjoyed introducing others to hiking in beautiful Baxter State Park. He was a past-president of the Maine Appalachian Trail Club, an overseer of the trail and helped maintain sections of it. He was also instrumental and very proud of his work in setting up the hiking trail system in Readfield. It was not unusual to see him with a chainsaw clearing out blow downs on the trails or with a can of paint to refresh blazes. In addition, he loved cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, canoeing, traveling and reading.

He was involved in numerous organizations throughout the state of Maine and was honored by the town of Readfield with the Spirit of America award for his volunteerism. He made many friends along the way and was loved by many.

He was predeceased by his parents; and his sister, Marjorie Wright of Bowdoinham.

He is survived by four sisters who loved him dearly, Linda Henry of Curepipe, Mauritius Island, Indian Ocean, Julie Harkins of Irvine, Calif., Barbara Pappalardo of Rocky Hill, Conn. and Cathy Wright-Ramsay of Hampden; as well as many nieces and nephews from around the world.

A celebration of his life will be held at a later date for family and friends.
