Viola Jeanette Sides

HARTLAND – On Aug. 21, 2023, Viola Jeanette Sides, 97, of Hartland, Maine, left her worldly possessions behind in favor of the ones she would enjoy for the rest of eternity.

Viola Sides, better known as Vicky to her friends and family was born on Feb. 2, 1926, to Ruel and Lillian (McClullen) Neal.

In March of 1949 Vicky married Harry (Buddy) Sides and together they had five children. Vicky and Buddy lived all their lives in Maine, although they spent many winters in Florida with their special Niece Linda Dlouhy and her husband Mike, and their family.

She is survived by her daughter, Evelena Huffman of Wisconsin, son Dean and his wife Geneva of St Albans, son Montell (Boo) and companion Karen Rodgers of Hartland, her sister Anita Parks of Hartland, and a brother Ronnie of Pennsylvania. Vicky was preceded in death by her parents Ruel and Lillian Neal, husband, Buddy Sides, sons Dana Sides and Steven Sides, sisters Elizabeth and Lorraine and brothers Durwood and Everett, and a granddaughter Danielle. She had nine grandchildren, Scotty, Denielle, Vicky, Kristen, Heidi, Greg, Brad, and Mindy. 29 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

Vicky was always a force to be reckoned with, strong-willed but very loving and kind to others. She used to invite her neighbors to the family reunion, telling them “You’re as good as family.”

One of her proudest moments was when the town of Hartland presented her with the Boston Gold Cane in honor of the oldest resident of the town.

Although Vicky is no longer with us, she will never be forgotten. In her 97 years, Vicky taught her friends and family many things. From her love of cooking and canning, she left many recipes for future generations to remember and enjoy, from her love of sewing and making crafts she left the quilts that she made for her grandchildren.

Vicky held several jobs in addition to being a full-time mother and wife. She worked at Emerson’s egg farm in Corinna for several years, and she worked in the kitchen at the St Albans elementary school.

There will be a graveside service to be held at the Sherman Cemetery in Sherman, Maine on September 16.
