WATERVILLE — A Winslow man was arrested and charged in a shooting that left another man wounded as part of a confrontation that occurred at the Country Kitchen Bakery Outlet at the intersection of Kennedy Memorial Drive and Airport Road, police said Thursday.

Christopher McKenna, 25, was charged with Class C reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon following the shooting Wednesday afternoon, Waterville police Chief William Bonney said in a statement.

The victim, whom officials have yet to identify publicly, drove himself to Northern Light Inland Hospital, which is a short distance away on Kennedy Memorial Drive. Bonney said the man suffered injuries not considered life-threatening.

McKenna was arrested at the scene Wednesday. Officials said he was an employee of Country Kitchen Bakery.

Detectives said they had learned the shooting was the result of an altercation and was a continuation of an incident that occurred earlier in the day.

“As a result of numerous witness interviews and diligent scene processing, detectives determined that Christopher McKenna was the individual who discharged the firearm, striking another male subject with one round,” Bonney said in the statement.

McKenna was taken to the Kennebec County Correctional Facility in Augusta on $500 cash bail. A jail official said McKenna had posted bond Thursday and was no longer being held.

“The case remains under investigation,” Bonney said, “and we expect further charges going forward.”

Bonney added, “I want to stress the importance of responsible gun ownership, urging gun owners to know their rights and understand that the use of firearms cannot be in a manner that puts members of the public at risk.”

The shooting drew a heavy police response, with several cruisers with their lights flashing at the bakery outlet’s parking lot as officers entered and exited the building and collected evidence.

Witnesses who asked not to be named said they saw two women on cellphones outside the bakery outlet at 2 Airport Road, and soon afterward saw a man who appeared to be in his mid-30s run out of the store, get into a beige or silver Chevrolet Tahoe and speed off.

Police swarmed the building a short time later, the witnesses said.

The bakery outlet is across from the Dunkin’ at 419 Kennedy Memorial Drive and adjacent to the Budget Host Airport Inn at 400 Kennedy Memorial Drive. Central Maine Motors Auto Group is across from the bakery outlet on Airport Road.
