WATERVILLE — One person was wounded in a shooting Wednesday inside the Country Kitchen Bakery Outlet at the corner of Kennedy Memorial Drive and Airport Road, according to police Chief William Bonney.

“There was a shooting here — it’s actively under investigation,” Bonney said at the scene just after 4 p.m.

The incident was reported around 3:45 p.m. and the victim was transported about a mile away to Northern Light Inland Hospital on Kennedy Memorial Drive.

Bonney would not say whether the victim was a man or woman, but he said police know the identities of those involved. He also did not comment on the extent of the person’s injuries.

“We’re going to interview everyone who was involved, so we have a number of interviews to do,” he said. “All involved parties have been identified so we’re comfortable in saying there’s no threat to the community.

No one had been taken into custody by late afternoon.

Bonney said the shooting was the result of an altercation but he declined to give more details while police are investigating.

Several Waterville police cruisers with their lights flashing were parked in the lot around the bakery outlet while officers collected evidence and went in and out of the building.

Witnesses who asked not to be named said they saw two women on phones outside the outlet and soon afterward they saw a man who appeared to be in his mid-30s run out of the entrance to the store and get into a beige or silver Chevrolet Tahoe and quickly speed off.

A short time later police cruisers swarmed the building, the witnesses said.

The bakery outlet is across from Dunkin Donuts on Kennedy Memorial Drive and adjacent to the Budget Host Inn on that road. Central Maine Motors Auto Group is located across from the bakery outlet on Airport Road.
