The Morning Sentinel of Aug. 19 includes an interesting article by Steve Collins of the Sun Journal on Civil War Brevet Brigadier General George Henry Nye. It states that Gen. Nye “may be the only Civil War general to have begun his service as a private.”

Selden Connor of Fairfield also began his military career as a private (Vermont, 1st Infantry) and ended his active service as a brigadier general in Maine’s volunteer army. General Connor later became governor of Maine.
