In the spring, the Central Maine Garden Club posted a grant application in the Sentinel. We challenged volunteers to write a proposal to receive money to plant flowers in visible places in the central Maine area. We were intending to fund about five of these, but after reading all eight well thought-out applications, we decided to fund them all.

Earlier this summer a gentleman was leaving a nursing home after visiting his wife. He had stopped at the stoplight at the corner of West River Road and Kennedy Memorial Drive. There he noticed the flowers that volunteers from the South End Association had planted. While he waited for the light to change, he admired the flowers. He commented to me, later that day, that seeing those flowers warmed his heart.

Hats off to the volunteers of South End Association for brightening his day.
