MADISON – Virgil C. Oliver, 80, passed away at Maplecrest Nursing Home in Madison after a long battle with cancer on Friday, Sept. 1, 2023, with family by his side.

Born in Starks on July, 29, 1943, to the late Herbert P. and Olive (Lynds) Oliver, Virgil grew up in Starks with two brothers and three sisters. Virgil attended elementary school in Starks before going to Madison High School and graduating in 1961. In 1963 Virgil and Diane Fletcher married. They had just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in August. Together they raised five children.

In high school Virgil worked at the Somerset Green house in Anson, where he learned how to make flower arrangements. Later on Virgil made flower arrangements for family and friends weddings. After high school Virgil started driving truck. He hauled potatoes from Maine to Maryland. He hauled gas for Emery Slip from Portland to Madison, Coburn Gore and other places throughout Maine. Virgil worked at Madison Paper when it was owned by Pentax Corp. When the mill closed he worked for himself in the woods. Virgil then worked for the Town of Starks as Road Commissioner, and was Fire Chief for the Town of Starks as well as Town Fire Warden. Virgil went to work for Currier Trucking hauling wood chips to the paper mills across the state. He worked for Jenness Trucking hauling wood to the paper mills. The last job that he had before retiring was working for Merle L. Lloyd and sons. Virgil worked at M L Lloyd and Sons for approximately 40. At M L Lloyd and Sons, Virgil drove truck, operated equipment, and was job foreman. After retiring Virgil continued to work in the earthworks field. He worked for Adrian Brochu operating equipment. Virgil assisted Adrian at Ira Mt, and Quill Hill, making scenic views for everyone to enjoy.

Virgil enjoyed hunting, fishing, jeeping, and camping. One of his favorite hobbies was wood working He made many things for his grandchildren from treasure chests to Adirondack chairs, to a wooden ride on tow truck. Many of the things Virgil made from wood he gave away to friends and family.

Virgil was predeceased by; his son, Steven L Oliver; his parents, Herbert P. and Olive Oliver; his in-laws, Hurley and Janet (Hilton) Fletcher; his brothers, Melvin Oliver and Lee Oliver; his sisters, Joyce (Oliver) Tracy, and Irene Caswell; brothers-in-law, Gary Fletcher, and Larry Fletcher; sisters in-law, Linda (Fletcher), Joan Fletcher.

Virgil is survived by his wife Diane Oliver; his daughter Brenda Hibbard, her husband Dana, and their son Joshua; Virgil’s sons, Curtis Oliver and his wife Norma, Hurley Oliver and his wife Donna, Herbert E Oliver and his fiancée Susy Rawson, and his daughters, Briana Smith and her husband Logan, Emily Oliver and her fiancé Deyon Kitchin, and their two sons Cooper and Cohen Kitchin, a son Matthew and fiancée Lindsay Lesperance. Virgil is also survived by his sisters Pearl Urquhart, Euna Davis and her husband Terry, his brother Ervin and his wife Lynn. Virgil is survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law, Dennis Fletcher and his wife Linda, David Fletcher and his wife Mary, Sandra Weese and her husband Gary and Betty Burpee and her husband John; and many nieces and nephews.

A committal service will be held at the Sunset Cemetery on the Fahi Pond Rd in North Anson, on Sept. 16 at 11 a.m. A celebration of life will follow at Virgil and Diane’s residence, 262 Park St, Madison Maine.
