Glen Clark Tompkins

PERU – Glen Clark Tompkins, 92, of Peru passed away in the early morning hours of Sept. 14, 2023.

Glen was born in Belgrade on June 3, 1931, to Clayton and Grace Tompkins. He spent his younger years working on the family farm and enlisted in the Army at age 18. He served in the Korean War until he was wounded, awarded a Purple Heart and honorably discharged.

He met the love of his life, Pearl Elizabeth Zinck, in 1956 and they were married just a few months later on Sept. 9, 1956. Together they made their home on the Ridge Road in Peru and raised two children, Joseph and Lynda.

Glen briefly worked for others but was never happy until starting his lifelong career as an entrepreneur in 1972. Over the next 50 years, he owned and operated several successful businesses, including Glens Shell, Glens Discount Fuels, Logging with son his Joey, GlenRick Tire, Glens Tire and Auto and finally Glens Country Wood Crafts. He continued to work well into his late 80s until declining health outweighed his stubbornness.

Glen was also an active community member, volunteering his time as a Boy Scout troop leader, a founding member of the Peru partridge patrol snowmobile club, and a proud participant of all summer fest parades.

He received an honorary high school diploma with his twin granddaughters in 2004.

Throughout his life he enjoyed riding his motorcycle, snowmobiling, attending bluegrass festivals and old country music.

Glen is survived by his daughter, Lynda Hebert and companion David Smith of Peru; grandchildren Tommy Tompkins of Carthage, Tanya and Aaron Perreault of Dixfield, Tyler and Caitlin Tompkins of Sudbury, Mass., Michelle and Kevin Nylen of Scituate, Mass., Liz and Josh Lambert of Chesterville, Marie and James Killeen of Auburn, N.H., Joe Hebert and companion Maddy Allen of Salem, N.H.; 12 great grandchildren with two more on the way; and five great-great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents, his five siblings, his wife and his son Joey.
