Verna L. Jenney

BELGRADE – Verna L. Jenney, 96, passed away on Sept. 10, 2023, with her loving family at her side. She was born in Gardiner on Aug. 16, 1927, daughter to the late Frank L. and Pearl H. (Spear) Rich.

Verna attended Hallowell High School and was in the graduating class of 1944. She began working for the State of Maine as a temporary worker, eventually earning full time employment as a key punch operator programming computers until her retirement. Verna worked for the State of Maine for 30 years.

Verna Jenney was married to Douglas G. Jenney for 43 years until his passing in March 2011.

In her free time, she deeply enjoyed traveling around the United States and Europe with her husband Doug. They traveled to every state in the union except for Utah. She also enjoyed knitting and crocheting, reading, and spending time with family. Verna was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching her great-grandchildren’s athletic events and watching football, golf, and major league soccer on television.

Verna was a very active member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Shriners Widows Club, and was the Secretary for the Maine branch of the National League of Postmasters.

She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Cole of Belgrade; stepchildren Steve Jenney of Jackman, Martha Massey and her husband Larry of Inverness, Fla., Spencer Jenney and his partner Denise Gardiner of Belgrade, Scott Jenney of Port Saint Lucie, Fla.; grandson, Jason Labbe and his wife Hazel of Belgrade, granddaughter, Jennifer Fortin and her husband Greg of Vassalboro, granddaughter, Ann Truman of Gardiner; great-granddaughter, Savannah Clark and her husband Thaddeus of Vassalboro, great-granddaughter, Sarah Labbe of Belgrade, great-granddaughter, Emma Fortin of Vassalboro and great-grandson, Cole Fortin of Vassalboro. Verna is also survived by sisters-in-law, Lucille Nickless and Judy Jenney; as well as several step-grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Verna was predeceased by her brother, Donald Rich; and her son, Wilfred Labbe Jr.

In honor of Verna, there will be a graveside service at Pine Grove Cemetery, Belgrade on Saturday Sept. 23 at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
