CHELSEA — A young girl has died after being struck by a tow truck Wednesday afternoon on Windsor Road, officials said.
The incident happened around 2:27 p.m. at 191 Windsor Road, according to Rick Sieberg, chief of the Gardiner Fire Department.
Sieberg said the truck was a ramp truck towing a vehicle at the time. The driver stayed as officials worked the scene.
According to Shannon Moss, spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety, the child was 21 months old and was playing outside a residence on Windsor Road when she wandered into the roadway and laid down. Authorities have not released her name or the identity of the truck driver.
State troopers said a 62-year-old male driver from Chelsea was traveling northbound on Windsor Road in his 2007 GMC flatbed tow truck when he struck the child. The driver did not realize that it was a child lying in the road until the vehicle struck her.
Officials attempted to revive the girl as she was transported to MaineGeneral Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, according to Sieberg.
It is unclear what led to the crash and whether anyone is facing charges following the child’s death. Maine State Police are investigating the crash.
The Maine State Police, Gardiner Fire Department, Gardiner Ambulance Service, Togus Fire Department and Chelsea Fire Department responded.
