JACKMAN — Jaxson Desjardin, 13, led a team of volunteers to rejuvenate the three tables and wooden canopies above them at the town’s Armand Pomerleau Park. The work was done the weekend of Sept. 8-9 as part of his Eagle Scout Project.

Twenty years ago Eagle Scout candidate Timothy Gilboe built a picnic table and canopy at Pomerleau Park. Since then, the town has built two more tables and canopies, but weather and time has taken its toll on all three, according to a news release from Chuck Mahaleris, district chairman for the Kennebec Valley District of Scouting.

“This was a much-needed project for the community,” said Troop 497 Scoutmaster Karla Talpey. “This is one of the spots many people enjoy not only in summer but throughout the year.”

Seventy hours of prep time was necessary for Desjardin to plan the project, recruit and organize volunteers, reach out for donations and obtain his materials.

Several people worked Sept. 8 to prepare for the work day by replacing boards on some of the tables and performing other site work. Thirteen volunteers worked Sept. 9 scraping and repainting the picnic tables and canopies, and replacing old shingles with a new metal roof on the canopy built during Gilboe’s Eagle project.

A total of 55 hours on Saturday saw the completion of the project. Other work done included brush removal, adding crushed stone, raking and stump removing.

Desjardin, an eighth-grade student at Forest Hills Middle School, is the son of Jeff and Stephanie Desjardin of Jackman.
