WATERVILLE — The founders of a popular culinary collective known as Ghetto Gastro were at Colby College on Thursday for a series of events highlighting their collaborative enterprise.

Ghetto Gastro was formed in the Bronx in New York City about a decade ago by Jon Gray, Pierre Serrao and Lester Walker, and all three were on the Waterville campus to meet students and discuss their work, which uses the culinary arts to promote community, particularly by incorporating design, music, fashion and other elements.

The trio came out last year with the popular cookbook “Black Power Kitchen.” Along with the three men, Ghetto Gastro includes chefs and food enthusiasts with ties to the Bronx.

The three met with Colby students during lunch at Cotter Union, participated in a reception and panel discussion at the new Gordon Center for Creative and Performing Arts and attended a battle of the DJs marking the 50th anniversary of hip-hop.
